To the Seventh Generation

Hello from Fall Creek Abbey!

In a meeting recently, someone told me that for thirty years he’s had on his desk a framed copy of the seventh-generation principle of the Iroquois Confederacy. An hour later, I joined a friend for a beer and within the first few minutes of our conversation, he mentioned the same proverb!

“In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”

It wasn’t until I drove away that it hit me. What was this startling synchronicity trying to say to me? What are the implications of living with such vision and care?

Are you aware that September is Environmental Awareness Month? Though it may seem that every month has a cause to support, this one matters to all of us and our children’s children’s children–to the seventh generation!

This is why I recently published a novel, The Greenling. It’s about a young woman named Noah who comes of age in the midst of our planet’s environmental crisis. Noah has a growing awareness that Nature is drawing her to become an active part of the solution.

One of my hopes in writing this story is that it might inspire young people to fall more in love with our beautiful world and to seek out ways to care for the Earth as activists and protectors.

So, in light of September’s Environmental Awareness Month, would you do something for the next seven generations? Would you buy a copy of The Greenling and give it to a young person you could envision being part of a positive environmental legacy?

You can purchase the book wherever you like to buy books (see below). If you’d like to buy a copy from Fall Creek Abbey, you can receive a $5 discount by using the code: AWARE2025.

May this autumn season remind us of Nature’s glory and our imperative to be good stewards of God’s marvelous, yet vulnerable creation.

Gratefully yours,

Dave Booram

I was just thinking about the idea of how decisions that we make and the way we live our lives has a ripple effect that carries on for generations ("consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations"). Previously I shared a video in a comment here that I believe exemplifies beautifully a life well lived that will have a positive impact for generations. It was the video of Erika Kirk (Charlie Kirk's widow) giving testimony about her husband who was brutally assassinated this past week while he was speaking on a college campus. I don't know why, but for some reason my comment was deleted. If you were the one that did that, I would lov…

A beautiful tribute by Erika Kirk about her husband.
