Greta Thunberg and the Burning Bush

December 12, 2019

Yesterday, Time magazine named its person of the year: 16-year-old environmental activist, Greta Thunberg. She is the youngest person ever awarded this distinction.

I don’t know much about Greta or whether she identifies as a person of faith or believes that she is on a mission from God. But I do.

In fact, she reminds me of Moses who noticed a burning bush; and took the time to examine it more closely, only to hear a Voice speaking through it, summoning Moses on a mission to lead God’s people out of captivity into freedom.

Something about Greta’s passion and courage suggests to me that she hears the Eternal Voice speaking out:

“I have seen how My earth is being mistreated. I have heard her groaning from abuse and disregard; for I know well her suffering. The groanings of this planet have come before Me, and I have observed the cruel treatment she has suffered by human hands.”

Folks, our planet is a burning bush. Will we bother to take off our sandals, feel its precious soil beneath our feet, and recognize the holiness of this ground? I thank God for speaking to the young heart of Greta and her generation. I pray to God that each and everyone one of us will be teachable to what she has to say! More than that, let’s do our part to set our beautiful earth free from this crisis. (Read how: 13 Ways to Save the Earth from Climate Change)

On this Shout-out Thursday, I want to thank Susan Currie, director of the Selah Certificate Program in Spiritual Direction, who wrote a beautiful endorsement for our book, When Faith Becomes Sight and described it as a burning bush. May it be so!
